About Me

I am currently undertaking a PhD in computer science at UTS. My research area is evaluating narrative visualisation. Since starting my research I have published a research article, spoken at the Outlier data visualisation conference, was long-listed for the information is beautiful awards and had my work featured in the Nightingale magazine data visualisation challenge.

I have taught web diploma and web cert IV at Ultimo Tafe for 8 years. I have a TAE (training and assessment certificate) which allows me to train and assess government agency and provide certification.

Over my many years of experience, I have worked with many different technologies.

My preference is for PHP driven web-projects that have a MySQL database. I have worked in large teams for big name clients like St George bank (Wiliam) and NRMA (Profero), then more recently in small teams, creating very bespoke projects for UNSW (freelance) and UTS (Elton Consulting)

I have also worked as a front-end developer for Sydney based digital agencies where I created complex interfaces. I write clean, compatible code and also take WCAG very seriously.

Due to the fact that I was working in large teams I have experience using version control software GIT and Apache SVN.

Javascript
I have worked with various frameworks. I have been using jQuery for more than 7 years. This includes complex client side graphics like this animated Christmas card that was built using only Javascript and CSS3. See Christmas card here.

PHP & MySQL
I am comfortable with PHP and have used it in conjunction with various CMS solutions. I have worked using WordPress, Drupal, Silverstripe, custom CMS solutions, and Contao. I am well versed in SQL and also I have had experience using XML databases.

Email
I have built and managed HTML email sends for clients like Pizza Hut, EA Games and Diageo. This has been using mailing systems like Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor and Traction to databases with more than 300,000 records.

WordPress
It’s safe to say that if I was blind folded and my hands tied behind my back I could still integrate any design into a WordPress custom theme. I have built custom plug-ins from scratch and have also had intimate knowledge of plug-ins like WP-Members, Metabox IO, Advanced Custom Fields, Tribe Events Calendar, WooCommerce, Yoast SEO, NextGen Gallery etc. Regardless of the requirements, I will find a way through hacking pre-built plug-ins or creating a plug-in, to make it work as seamlessly as possible.

I also have integrated various APIs like Mailchimp, PayPal, Quickbooks etc. into WordPress. These have often been using complex code, with very unique requirements. I will happily go through in detail a list of examples.

Design
I have designed countless logos and websites. I design clean, minimal and responsive websites. Coming from a development background, I believe that it’s important to stay at the forefront of new web technologies and integrate them accordingly into the design. I also closely follow web design blogs, and various web design newsletters to follow the latest in design trends.
